eBay will tell you that the 99 cent auction attracts alot more traffic, more watchers, and higher end prices, this is the latest tip from ebay; to start at 99 cents....
Many ebayers (including newbies) are much more savy these days, and have a complete understanding of what sniping is and how to use the software to their benefit. These same eBayers also appreciate that the best way to get a bargain is to wait until the very last minute before starting to bid, meaning there is less chance for the seller to get the price they need to turn a profit.
The seasoned ebayer seller only knows too well that with some 99 cent auctions you may get a good price but under most circumstance you will not get a good price and most likely you will lose money, after the ebay fees are taken out. Those ebayers that start the auction at 99 cents will be on ebay for around 18 months before they realise that the time taken to make the ads, the cost price and the ebay fees are not worth their time and they drop out of ebay...
In the mean time these sellers make it difficult for everyone else...
in Part 2 I will look at power sellers who start at 99 cents
